My mom and I had a complicated relationship.  If people are peas, we were not from the same pod.  We loved each other, but we didn’t get each other.  She was passionate about taxes and shouting at the TV when her favorite teams played, and neither were really my thing.  I liked talking about feelings, and, well, she didn't.

She had been having a rough go after heart surgery two months earlier when I flew to visit her in the hospital just before Christmas in hopes of lifting her spirits and calming my dad and sister a bit.  When the World Cup took over her usual Sunday morning mass program, I surprised mom by whipping out my daily mass app (she mistakenly thought I’d abandoned my Catholic roots long ago) and celebrated with her.  Later, my sister and I sang holiday songs to her and my dad, and we all prayed the rosary together.

During a quiet moment, I was showing sketches to her and trying to explain the new jewelry business I’d been dreaming up throughout the last year.  I told her it would be heirloom-quality, consciously-crafted, neuroscience-backed experiential jewelry.  She said she didn’t get it (who can blame her?)  I explained that each piece comes with a guide to create a powerful personal affirmation the wearer can repeat to enhance emotional growth, and a portion of the profits fund social justice organizations.  Then she said, “so it’s like magic.”  I replied that it’s more science, but yes, it is like magic.  And man, she finally got me.  It is so bittersweet now that she’s no longer with us, as she passed away a week later.
